Expressions with Avoir and Faire

In English we say “I am hungry” or “I am 20 years old”. French does not use être-to be here. It uses avoir (to have): J’ai faim literally means “I have hunger”or J’ai vingt ans to say I am 20 years old.

In the same way, French uses faire (to do, to make) to talk about the weather and many activities: Il fait chaud → It’s hot.

Le saviez-vous ? J’ai faim… mais il est 16 heures !

In France, meals follow fairly fixed times. Lunch (le déjeuner) is usually eaten between 12 and 2 pm, and dinner (le dîner) often starts around 7.30 or 8 pm. Many restaurants stop serving lunch after 2 pm, so if you are hungry (avez faim) at 3 pm, you may only find a café or a bakery open.

To bridge the long afternoon, French children have le goûter, an afternoon snack around 4 pm. A classic goûter is a piece of baguette with a bar of chocolate, a pain au chocolat or some biscuits. Many adults secretly enjoy it too!
