Articles and Nouns in French
Nouns are the names of people, places or things. In French, every noun has a gender (masculine or feminine) and a number (singular or plural). Articles are the small words that come before a noun and show its gender and number. The two basic types of articles in French are indefinite articles and definite articles.
Indefinite Articles (Les articles indéfinis)
The indefinite article refers to a noun in a non-specific or general sense. Un and une are equivalent to “a” and “an” in English, and des means “some”. French has three forms, depending on gender and number:
| Article | Gender and number | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Un (uhn) | masculine singular | Un chien → a dog |
| Une (oon) | feminine singular | Une maison → a house |
| Des (day) | masculine or feminine plural | Des chiens (mp) → some dogsDes fleurs (fp) → some flowersDes maisons (fp) → some houses |
m = masculine, f = feminine, mp = masculine plural, fp = feminine plural
Definite Articles (Les articles définis)
The definite article refers to a specific noun or group of nouns. It is equivalent to “the” in English. French has four forms of the definite article:
| Article | Gender and number | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Le (luh) | masculine singular | Le chat → the cat |
| La (lah) | feminine singular | La voiture → the car |
| L’ (l) | singular noun that begins with a vowel or silent “h” | L’homme (m) → the manL’amie (f) → the friend (female)L’enfant (m/f) → the child |
| Les (lay) | masculine or feminine plural | Les chats (mp) → the catsLes voitures (fp) → the carsLes hommes (mp) → the menLes amies (fp) → the friends (female) |
⚠️ Reminder: The article you choose depends on the gender and number of the noun. Le and la both become l’ before a vowel or silent “h”.

Le saviez-vous ? Les chiens à Paris
The French are as passionate about dogs as they are about fashion and dining. Paris has about 300,000 registered dogs, which works out to roughly 2,857 dogs per square kilometre! Dog poop on the pavements was once so common that visitors joked, “Mind the merde”. In recent years, Paris has taken several steps to tackle the problem. The city has installed special dog-waste bins on its streets, and municipal patrols carry out spot checks. French law requires owners to clean up after their dogs, and those who do not can be fined.
Examples of Nouns in French
| Masculine nouns | Feminine nouns | Plural nouns |
|---|---|---|
| Le chat → the cat | La fille → the girl | Les chats → the cats |

👉 Important Notes:
- The gender of a noun is not always predictable, so learn every new noun together with its article: le chat, la maison.
- Most nouns form their plural by adding -s, but some have irregular plurals (see “Plural of Nouns” below).
- A few nouns change meaning with their gender: un livre → a book, but une livre → a pound (in weight).
⚠️ Reminder: The gender of a noun decides the article and the adjectives that go with it: un grand garçon → a tall boy, une grande maison → a big house.

When to Leave Out the Article
In some situations French leaves out the article. This can be confusing for learners, so here are the main cases at A1 level.
1. Before nationalities and languages
- Je parle français. → I speak French.
- Il est italien. → He is Italian.
- Elle parle anglais. → She speaks English.
2. Before professions after être
- Je suis professeur. → I am a teacher.
- Elle est médecin. → She is a doctor.
- Il est avocat. → He is a lawyer.
3. Before names of people and cities
- Je connais Marie. → I know Marie.
- Paris est une ville magnifique. → Paris is a beautiful city.
👉 Important Notes:
- If you add an adjective to a profession, the article comes back: C’est un bon professeur. → He is a good teacher.
- Countries are not like cities: they always take an article. La France est belle. → France is beautiful.
These rules have exceptions, so the best way to learn them is to notice them as you read and practise.
